Pyrenees’ Dawn

There are places so etched in my memory that bringing them to mind evokes a specific emotional state.

And that’s a superpower. Having a tool that will restore a specific emotional state is a gift in times of distress.

For me, this piece is a gift like that. It’s of my little French town, Quillan, in the Pyrenees foothills, nestled in a bowl of protection, layered with centuries of human settlement.

The emotional state it returns me to is a settled sense of security, of continuity in time, of comfort in the routines of communal life—bustling mornings, leisurely lunches and the slowing during twilight.

And so I guess this painting has a superpower too.
